I wanted to give a big thank you to everyone in our neighborhood for spending time on the project. The involvement of the residents of our neighborhood who have taken time to understand and provide feedback on the Harding/Brownhouse/Kensington/Forest Traffic Calming proposal is truly valued and appreciated. More involvement will result in greater chance of success of the project. The work that the Town Traffic Engineering Dept., led by Garo Garobedian and Melissa Evans, and the traffic engineering consultant hired by the town, Kevin Conroy, have done on this project has been extremely professional and effective.
We are looking forward to continuing to move forward on this project to reach the best possible result for our neighborhood.
Traffic Engineering has not exactly been over-zealous addressing resident concerns about the new configuration of this intersection.
What was wrong with the original intersection that could not be solved by some paint and shortening the island? How many accidents were reported over the past 5, or even 10 years, before the new configuration?
Here are 3 points:
1. a. The new stop sign on Shore Road blocks part of the deeded driveway right-of-way at 140/142 Shore.
b. The location of this sign makes it exceedingly dangerous to exit and enter this driveway.
c. Engineering and the BOS have been asked repeatedly to rethink the necessity and location of the sign. To no avail.
d. The police are waging a losing battle getting drivers to stop.
2. a.The narrowing of Sound Beach to one lane going south has resulted in traffic back-ups.
b. Cars making the new, wide, right turn on Sound Beach onto Shore often have to swerve right to avoid the oncoming beach traffic.
3. Some trucks cannot make the left hand turn onto Shore.
This is not traffic calming. It is traffic confusion.
The purpose of this intricate design defeats me. First of all it is hard to see. The glittering granite fails to glitter on a dull day. The road narrows such that if a car is legally parked on the east side of Sound Beach and a cyclist and a car are traveling north, the moving car has little option but to enter the median area. It is to be hoped that a car and cyclist are not traveling south at the same time.
This is not calming. It has a very bad effect on the blood pressure.
We need a 4 way stop at Forest and Brown House. We also need an "all-way" stop at Rockland and Forest. There are examples of stop signs at slower intersections around town with low in-coming traffic volume. We should all be making a note of these roads, to push our argument forward. Lockwood rd in Riverside has a stop sign "to no where" at the top of the hill before you get to Sound Beach Ave. I've never seen a car turning onto lockwood at that stop. I wonder if there are accidents there....
They are putting them on Shore Road and Sound Beach, can't be all bad then.
Alan thank you so much for setting this up, it's great!
Not to be all complaints, though, the rest of the plan sounds fine, except I am a bit worried about it being "too much" and the effect it will have on the aesthetics of the neighborhood.
And last but not least, thanks to Tad & Jane for getting this started. And thanks to Alan for setting up this website so we can all communicate!!

Has anyone any idea what this configuration cost?

Red Brick Crosswalk on Sound Beach
Horrible idea. Must go, imho.
