Brick Crosswalk at Sound Beach Avenue - driveway 1&2 Forest Ave.
I was shocked to see a proposed brick crosswalk about 8 feet to the right of the driveway at the corner of Forest and Sound Beach Avenue. Most cars glide past the STOP sign on Forest Avenue onto Sound Beach Avenue, so this proposed crosswalk is an accident waiting to happen. Drivers glance to the left at the STOP sign, but then immediately race around the corner onto Sound Beach Avenue without looking to their right as they assume that no cars (exiting a driveway) or pedestrians are in sight as this side of the street is only one direction. There will not be adequate time for cars to stop for pedestrians at this proposed sidewalk. I have lived at 1 Forest Avenue for over twenty years and both my children grew up in Old Greenwich and crossed over to Binney Park in grade school, middle school and high school using either the crosswalk at First Church and Sound Beach Avenue or the crosswalk at the Perrot Library at Sound Beach Avenue. This crosswalk proposes a real danger for residents/visitors/workers, etc. entering and exiting the driveway if proposed only several feet from the driveway. I invite an engineer to sit in the driveway and imagine this senario. There are numerous nearby crosswalks and this proposed crosswalk is ill conceived and has the potential for significant unintended consequences. I propose that this plan is reviewed as soon as possible and the proposed crosswalk be moved to a location closer to Harding Avenue where it will not impact driveway and street traffic and still serve pedestrians. I was under the impression that this plan needed to be signed off by residents to receive a majority vote. I have not been contacted in this regard. Please let me know if this can be brought to the attention of the engineers in charge of this plan.
